Donald E. Wilson, MD, D Sc (Hon), MACP, AGAF was Senior Vice President for Health Sciences at Howard University from 2007 until 2010 when he retired for the second time. Dr. Wilson was dean of the University Of Maryland School of Medicine from September 1991 until his retirement in September 2006. He was the nation’s first African American dean of an accredited non-minority medical school. In addition to serving as dean, Dr. Wilson became the University of Maryland’s first Vice-President for Medical Affairs in 1999.
Dr. Wilson came to Maryland after 11 years as professor and chair of the Department of Medicine for the State University of New York (SUNY) Health Science Center in Brooklyn. He was also physician-in-chief at the University Hospital and Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn.
Dr. Wilson has a national reputation for promoting increased diversity of the nation’s bio-scientific and biomedical workforces. He received the first “Herbert Nicken’s Award for Promoting Justice in Health Care,” from the Association of American Medical Colleges. He has chaired several permanent governmental agency committees dealing with research and healthcare, from the National Institutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration, and Agency for Health Care Policy and Research. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine.
Dr. Wilson has over 200 publications in the fields of internal medicine, gastroenterology, health care, and medical education.
He completed his undergraduate education at Harvard University, received his medical degree from Tufts University, and has received Honorary Degrees of Doctor of Science from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Tufts University, and SUNY Health Science Center in Brooklyn, NY. He is board-certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine.
