T. DeWitt Smith, Jr., PhD, is currently a PhD Candidate at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, with a concentration in Conflict Analysis and Resolution.
He currently serves as the founding Senior Pastor of the Trinity Baptist Church of Metro Atlanta in Decatur, GA. In January 1992, he accepted the pastorate of the historic West Hunter Street Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA, succeeding Civil Rights leader Dr. Ralph David Abernathy. Dr. Smith served as pastor for eleven years. Dr. Smith also served as Pastor of the New Hope Baptist Church in Akron, OH for fourteen years, and the Progressive Baptist Church of Elgin, IL, as pastor for seven years.
Dr. Smith was elected and installed as the 18th President of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc. (PNBC) in August 2006. He has been a part of the PNBC family for over 53 years.
He is an inductee in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Morehouse College Board of Distinguished Preachers.
Currently, Dr. Smith serves as a board member for the Morehouse School of Religion of the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) and The Community Advisory Board (CAB) for Morehouse School of Medicine. He is a member of the Baptist Ministers Union of Atlanta, an NAACP Life Member, and a member of SCLC. He was honored with a membership in the Order of the Kentucky Colonels in 2000 and 2007.
He now serves as co-facilitator along with Dr. Barbara Williams Skinner and Dr. Otis Moss, Jr. of the National African American Clergy Network.
He received his BA from Judson University, Master of Divinity, and Doctor of Ministry from Ashland Theological Seminary.
